My Journey with Histamine Intolerance From Childhood to Present Day

My Journey with Histamine Intolerance From Childhood to Present Day

Life with histamine intolerance presents unique challenges unlike other food allergies. While someone with a milk protein allergy simply avoids dairy products, histamine intolerance requires constant vigilance with nearly everything you eat. One wrong choice can ruin your entire day or even your week.

This is my complete journey from early childhood to today.

Early Warning Signs in Childhood

Food sensitivities have followed me since my earliest years. As a child, I struggled with allergies to milk protein and egg whites, forcing me to find alternatives to dairy. In my country at that time, soy products were the only available option.

This marked the beginning of my digestive problems. Severe and frequent abdominal pain became my constant companion. My parents took me to countless specialists over the years, yet all tests came back negative while my suffering continued.

In the early 2000s, histamine intolerance remained virtually unknown. Research was practically nonexistent, so this possibility never crossed our minds. None of my doctors considered it either.

Looking back with current knowledge, I suspect these were early signs of histamine intolerance, though this remains speculation. The abdominal pain occurred multiple times weekly, often coinciding with my consumption of fermented soy products.

Ongoing Challenges During Teenage Years

With puberty came surprising news from doctors—my food allergies had disappeared and I could eat everything again (at least that’s what they claimed). I cannot recall exactly when this happened, but after stopping soy products, my abdominal pain became increasingly rare. Though still more frequent than what my peers experienced, it became manageable.

Around age 18, many issues resurfaced. This time, instead of abdominal pain, I experienced regurgitation and vomiting. These symptoms typically occur when histamine levels suddenly spike in the body, triggering an intense reaction.

Despite not receiving a proper diagnosis until more than a decade later, I can clearly identify this as the period when my histamine intolerance symptoms began to worsen.

Rapid Deterioration in Early Twenties

In the years following the onset of regurgitation and vomiting problems, my condition gradually deteriorated. This decline likely stemmed from my post high school lifestyle when I began working and studying. My eating habits became truly abysmal, leading me to gain over 30kg in just two years.

This unhealthy lifestyle probably intensified my histamine intolerance. The frequency of my symptoms, especially regurgitation, became extreme. I experienced regurgitation after literally every meal. For many years, not a single day passed without this distressing symptom.

Reflux problems accompanied the regurgitation. The combination of strong acid and frequent regurgitation transformed my life into a nightmare. Consequently, I still regularly repair my teeth because the acid destroyed them all. Remember, if you have acid issues, dental damage will inevitably follow.

Positive Changes in Late Twenties

During my late twenties, I made significant lifestyle improvements. I began weightlifting with a trainer four times weekly, lost over 20kg, built muscle, and prioritized healthier eating. My histamine intolerance issues decreased to once a day at maximum, with some days even being symptom free. I still had no knowledge about histamine intolerance or which specific foods to avoid.

The reason I never searched online for information about histamine intolerance was because years earlier, a gastroenterologist told me I simply had reflux and should learn to live with it. I received prokinetic medication to reduce symptoms, but it proved largely ineffective.

Finding Answers Approaching Thirty

As my 30th birthday approached, I decided to address as many health problems as possible to improve my quality of life. I found a new gastroenterologist and embarked on months of investigation, finally yielding results that could help improve my situation. While I cannot completely resolve my health issues, I now know what to avoid for relief and experience problems much less frequently.

I initiated this new round of investigation hoping to fix what I thought was reflux, which I believed was a mechanical issue. The surprising answer was that there was no reflux at all, and a mechanical issue could not be the source of my problem.

The true source was histamine intolerance, which I received as an official diagnosis. I also learned my childhood allergies had returned: milk protein allergy, egg white allergy, and now lactose intolerance as well.

With these new conditions, I completely transformed my eating habits. Creating a problem free meal plan took months of adjustment, but I managed to adapt successfully.

My problems have not disappeared completely since I continue to experiment with new food options. Sometimes I encounter high histamine levels even in foods where they should not be present, often due to improper or extended storage.

Living with Histamine Intolerance Today

Currently, I feel relatively stable with my diagnosis and focus on maintaining the healthiest diet possible. This creates new challenges such as frequent shopping to ensure the freshest foods.

The most challenging situations occur when I need to purchase packaged food while traveling. In these cases, I now use DAO enzyme supplements, which prove very effective.

Consuming adequate protein presents another significant challenge. Since I cannot eat two major categories of protein rich foods due to my other allergies and intolerances, I rely heavily on fresh meat and occasionally safe legumes.

Living with histamine intolerance involves many adjustments. Over time, you adapt, although the initial months or years prove very difficult. You must learn considerable information and sometimes experiment, which can temporarily increase symptoms.

I have learned two key insights about histamine intolerance:

  • First, no two people experience identical problematic foods and symptoms.
  • Second, eating something without issues once does not guarantee the same food will be safe next time. I experienced this with fast food burgers when traveling with limited food options.

Conclusion

My journey with histamine intolerance spans decades of unexplained symptoms, misdiagnoses, and finally, clarity. From childhood allergies to teenage digestive issues and then severe adult symptoms, this condition has shaped every aspect of my life. The path to diagnosis was unnecessarily long due to limited medical awareness about histamine intolerance during my formative years.

What I have learned through this struggle is invaluable. Histamine intolerance requires personalized management, constant vigilance, and adaptability. While challenging, it becomes manageable with proper knowledge and planning. The improvement in my quality of life since receiving proper diagnosis and treatment has been remarkable, though the condition requires ongoing attention.

This experience has transformed my perspective on health and inspired me to create the Histamine Life project. By sharing practical advice, recipes, and support resources, I hope to spare others the years of suffering and confusion I endured. Through education and community building, we can make living with histamine intolerance less isolating and more manageable for everyone affected by this complex condition.
